Archiviazioni is an open project of documentation, discussion and action which works on the relation between art and public sphere in Southern Italy and abroad, with particular focus on Mediterranean cultural basin which is part of.
The operative tools are the Actions which foresee different outcomes and modalities of development in relation with the specificities of the contexts involved, like residency programs, workshops, site specific productions; and Archivica, archive in progress births as reply to the lack of spaces for updating and for contemporary artistic and curatorial research in South Italy, through the archive as educational, artistic and generative practise for new contents and operative modalities.
Archiviazioni works on the southerness as space, as singular dimension, as concept and paradigm, with its specificities, its richness and its problems, with which the artists, the curators and the cultural operators who live and work on the territory deal daily. A space considered in its different meanings of cultural, social, political, philosophical and geographical, as outcome, or better, as ‘outcomes’ always different, of relations, tensions, sharings, redefinitions and crossings. The same debate on the ‘European identity’, where the geographical and political definitions often don’t answer to the cultural ones, is in a way an attempt to redefine spaces in constant transformation. In this frame the Southern Italy, for its history, the geographical position, its antropological and social carachteristics and for the variety of cultures of which is composed, is a privileged field of investigation, to be rivisited through the gaze and the methods of the contemporary artistic practise, with an interdisciplinary approach, in dialogue and comparizon with the national and international experiences, in order to place itself not anymore as place of border and isolation but as space of participation and experimentation of relational models between art and territory, based on its specificities.
The project has been conceived and iniciated by Giusy Checola on 2010 as on line platform, included in the program Lab 12:00 promoted by the SoutHeritage Foundation for contemporary art of Matera (Basilicata, Italy).
On 2011 it became cultural association of which has been part also Luigi Presicce, Salvatore Baldi, Margherita Fanizza and Federica Scorza, during the first year of activity it has been host by the Laboratory of Art and Architecture in Lecce, thanks to the collaboration of Anna Cirignola, Elvira De Masi and Toti Semerano.
From 2012 Archiviazioni is a mobile project and an artistic and interdisciplinary group of planning, which work in national and international field, composed by Giusy Checola (director and curator), Pietro Gaglianò (curator and scholar), Diego Segatto (architect and visual designer) and Susanna Ravelli (EU planner).
The group works in order to achieve the Archiviazioni’s aims and at the same time offers its competences to pubblic and private subjects in the field of contemporary art, education, cultural planning and publishing, for the realization of site specific projects in relation with landscape, environment and tourism, and for the development of alternative formats of collective creative processes.
