Lucie Mičíková, Archivica, artist’s book. Lecce, 2011. Unpublished work realised on the occasion of Artissima 18, Lecce (Puglia region), 2011.

archivica is an archive in progress which includes publications, magazines, videos, films and ephemerals related to projects, researches and artworks about the relationship between art, territory and public sphere, in Italy and abroad, with a specific section gathering printed material, digital and audio-visual docmentations of artists, curators, historicians and scholars who are active in Southern Italy and Mediterranean cultural basin.

The archive replies to a South Italy’s urgency, where mainly Archiviazioni works, that is offering to artists, curators, researchers, professionals, cultural operators, students and whoever is interested in, the opportunity of updating and making research on artistic, curatorial and educational experiences as like as theorethical paths about the relation between artistic practices and public domain at national and international level, at local and global dimension.

Archivica, which has been placed for almost one year in Lecce in Apulia region at the Laboratory of Art and architecture (2011), is both a mobile and permanent archive, which is going to be displaced in a new physical venue. It’s collection is enriched step by step by materials specifically requested and/or sent by national and international artists, art institutions and pluridisciplinary universities and centers for research, selected by the directors; by materials collected in relation to Archivica’s topics and sessions; materials searched, selected and collected on the occasion of artistic and pluridisciplinary projects where the components of Archiviazioni association are involved in.

The archive does not move contents in one way direction, just adding and collecting materials. The simple access of an element into the archive implicates each time a redefinition of its inner meaning, in relation to others elements which it deals with and at the same time in relation with the ones left outside its collection. Thus the archive can be considered a semantic field that affects both its own internal cataloging and external dimension (the whole material not included into the archive). In these terms, the application of such practice to contemporary art’s action lead to the archive as a generative factor of meanings, visions, relationships.

Its composition is dynamic and its presence is tangible, symbolic and exemplar. The carrying out of the archive, theoretically, produces processes of self awareness into the disciplinary and territorial fields where it works (especially if they partially arise in addition to the others). With this perspective the archival practice can be seen as starting point for the creation of other archives and re-elaboration, for alternative ways of education and as tool for the circulation of informations. From a planning point of view the archive’s generative factor lies into the possibility to recognize and study new forms and methods of create and planning the public sphere, through the knowledge and the analysis of artistic and pluridisciplinary others’ practices that interact with public sphere and with its complexity.

By generating opportunities for planning development and new meanings in different geographical and cultural contexts, the archive extends the temporariness and the contingency that always more characterize the artistic research and action in public space, as main consequence of a lacking cultural, social and political vision.
